What is "GreenPower"?

Clean energy produced from renewable resources, such as the sun, the wind and underground reservoirs of hot water and steam, is often called "green power." The GreenPower program offered by Sierra Pacific provides a convenient way for you to show your support of renewable energy in northern Nevada by making donations in your monthly utility bill.

The mission of the Green Power program is to support and promote the use and development of green sources of energy in Nevada, with an emphasis on educating Nevada’s K-12 population.

The Green Power program brings renewable energy education to schools throughout the state of Nevada by installing permanent solar panels and wind turbines on the roofs of schools throughout the state. These modest installations are hooked up to monitoring software which assists students in learning about how renewable energy is generated.

Teachers receive corresponding curriculum to use in their lessons to enforce the idea that renewable energy is attainable. Since its inception in 2000, Green Power has been a partnership among the Desert Research Institute (DRI), Sierra Pacific Power, Nevada
Power and their customers.

A good example is the Traner Middle School (in Reno) solar and wind generating system. Other schools in northern Nevada that participate include Mendive Middle School (in Reno), French Ford Middle School (in Winnemucca), Carson City Middle School, and Norman Elementary School (in Ely). You can read more about it at the Desert Research Institute's website

When you volunteer to add a few dollars to your monthly electric bill, you are giving the knowledge of renewable energy to Nevada’s future power customers. When they grow up to be consumers, they will be able to make informed decisions about renewable energy options for their own homes and businesses.
