It is not uncommon to see raptors, such as hawks and eagles, soar overhead
in Nevada skies. Because of the lack of trees on much of Nevada's
rangelands, power lines have become a substitute place for these birds to perch
and roost. Sierra Pacific scientists and engineers are working together to make
alternative nesting platforms for the birds and make the electrical facilities
safe for bird use.
This effort has the mutual benefit of protecting sensitive raptor species and
reducing the amount of bird related outages experienced by our customers.Dummy
poles are fitted with nesting platforms that are being used by this Osprey (photo
right). In addition, older powerlines are fitted with anti-perching devices
that occupy the hazardous locations (photo below).
