Crews Lend a Hand in Storm-Wracked Florida
Nevada's electric utilities sent workers to the rescue when California residents were without power due to that state's forest fires last year, and now that Florida is reeling from one of the worst hurricane seasons on record, SPPC employees are helping restore power there, too.
Sierra Pacific line crews are in Orlando, Florida to help restore power to residents who've been battered by four hurricanes in six weeks. Four line trucks and other company vehicles and equipment were loaded on flatbed trailers on Sunday, September 26, to begin the cross-country journey to Florida. Progress Energy, the electric utility for central and north Florida, requested assistance from Sierra Pacific and other utilities throughout the U.S. Sierra Pacific crews are expected to be in Florida for 10 to 14 days, replacing hundreds of poles downed by the hurricanes. All the costs associated with sending the employees and equipment to Florida will be reimbursed by Progress Energy through a mutual aid agreement.
