The Public Service Commission of Nevada (PSC) has approved a five-year contract between Sierra Pacific Power Co. and its largest electric customer, Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc., which make Sierra the exclusive electric provider for Barrick's project in north central Nevada. The contract can be extended up to 20 years.

The approval was the PSC's first of a number of contracts that Sierra Pacific has negotiated with its largest electric customers under a new rate tariff, which also was approved by the PSC. The new tariff, known as GS-5T, is a progressive new rate for the companies largest customers using three megawatts of electricity or more. GS-5T allows the utility to negotiate contracts to a maximum initial term of 10 years.

"Mining is an important customer segment for Sierra Pacific," said Randy Harris, vice president, Energy Marketing Business Group for Sierra Pacific. "We're proud that our first approved contract to provide competitively priced energy services is with Barrick, the largest gold producer in North America."
