"We educate the public on what to do and how to deal safely with electricity, gas and water," Feleciano said.
The company receives numerous requests for programs from organizations ranging from schools to service groups. Requests are also received to participate at various community events.
According to Feleciano, these programs have reached more than 4,500 people so far this year.
Although the safety programs vary according to age group of the audience, two main elements, Hazard Hamlet and the Big Electric ("Big E") Board, are used in almost every presentation.
The Big E Board operates at 12,000 volts. Miniature models of equipment or people are used to show the dangers of interacting with high voltage lines. For instance, Sierra Pacific provides a safety course for pilots at the Great Reno Balloon Race every year, using a miniature balloon to show what happens when it touches overhead lines. The Big E Board emits a visible electrical current.
Hazard Hamlet, which operates with less voltage, is often used in schools and at public events. Recently, Hazard Hamlet appeared at the Cinco De Mayo celebration, Circus Circus Safety Expo and Elko Mining Expo.
While the programs are typically designed to educate people about the everyday hazards of electricity, water and gas, this year's floods have added a new element to the requests. Feleciano said Sierra Pacific has been working with the various cities served by the company to prepare for possible future emergencies, such as earthquakes and floods.
