"Twice weekly watering minimizes peak day water consumption and delays the need for larger water facilities which could lead to higher prices," she said.
Wise water use is more important than ever because of the costliness of building expensive purification facilities that meet the strict requirements of the federally mandated Safe Drinking Water Act. Because of the success of twice weekly watering, the community has already been able to avoid building new, larger, costly treatment facilities.
Sierra Pacific water customers set new records for water consumption during 1997. A new peak day consumption high of 122 million gallons was set on July 13, 1997, breaking the old record of 115 million gallons per day set during 1996. Also, customers used a yearly total of 71,000 acre feet of water during 1997, up from 68,000 acre feet in 1996. (An acre foot is about 326,000 gallons.)
Carson said twice weekly watering will provide our community with drought protection for decades by satisfying conservation requirements of the Negotiated Settlement.
"During 1998, it is very important that residents continue the wise water use habits they developed during the past 10 years," she said.
Twice weekly watering is better for your lawn. The Yard Fitness Plan was developed by independent yard care experts and has been supported by Sierra Pacific for over 10 years because twice weekly water develops deeper root growth, reduces lawn disease and results in healthier lawns.
"Since 1986, twice weekly watering has been a proven and beneficial practice in our community: maintaining healthy lawns, providing drought water supplies, fostering efficient use of our water resources and reducing the need to build expensive treatment facilities," Carson said.
