Heading toward the garbage can? Wait - remember the simple saying, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle?" Nevada Recycles Day is making it even easier to follow this environmentally conscious action on Saturday, November 18.
This Saturday is the perfect time to change the garbage in your garage into resources. Instead of throwing out that pile of old appliances, motor oil, car batteries, phone books, and anti-freeze, drop them off at RSW Recycling's transfer station. RSW will recycle these items at no charge from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year, Batteries Plus will be collecting household batteries for recycling or proper disposal.
Have an assortment of aluminum, plastic, cardboard and newspaper? While you can normally recycle these items as part of the local curbside recycling program, this Saturday, they can be redeemed for cash at RSW! RSW Recycling is located at 1100 Commercial Row in Reno.
Local school children are helping to pump up the recycling rave, as well, with a bit of their own artistic zeal. Washoe County School District students in grades kindergarten to eighth grade were able to participate in a poster contest, with their interpretation of recycling. The contest helps emphasize the importance of sustaining natural resources through recycling. A reception will be held at Sierra Pacific Power, where winners of the poster contest will be presented with awards and prizes from Patagonia, and all the participant's posters will be on display.
It's all part of celebrating recycling in Nevada. For the third year in a row, Environmental Leadership, a local non-profit group, teamed up with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, RSW Recycling, Patagonia, and Sierra Pacific to sponsor Nevada Recycles Day. Visit Environmental Leadership to find out more about recycling and other environmental initiatives in the Truckee Meadows.
